Global capability centres — offshore units owned and run by the parent company — have been around for decades. What has changed is what they are for. Many began as back-office operations chosen for cost. A growing number now own core products, engineering platforms, analytics and research, with leaders who sit at the global decision-making table.
Why the shift
Talent is the biggest driver. Deep pools of experienced engineers, data scientists and product people — India foremost among the destinations — make it possible to build teams that lead work rather than execute it. Companies have also learned that owning a centre gives them continuity and control over intellectual property that outsourcing can't.
What successful centres get right
- A real mandate. Centres given ownership of outcomes, not just tasks, attract and keep stronger people.
- Senior leadership from the start. The first hires set the culture and credibility of everything that follows.
- Integration over isolation. Shared tools, shared rituals and people who travel both ways stop the centre becoming an island.
- An employer brand of its own. In competitive markets, candidates choose a team and a mission, not a parent company's logo.
Choosing where and how
Location decisions now weigh more than cost: the depth of talent in a specific skill, time-zone overlap, infrastructure and quality of life all matter. Many companies look beyond the largest cities to growing tier-2 hubs. And not every company builds alone — the build-operate-transfer model, where a partner sets up and runs the centre before handing it over, reduces the risk of the first years.
Plan for the long term
A centre that starts with a narrow scope should have a plan to grow into more ownership. The move from cost centre to value creator doesn't happen by accident; it is designed into the mandate, the leadership and the way success is measured.
